1973 October War for Flames of War

The models haven’t arrived yet, but I’ve been busy thinking through appropriate stats for various units and vehicles using the Flames of War rules.  I’ve tried to kick on from some late war WW2 stats, particularly the Panther and King Tiger.  As there is still some WW2 tech floating about in 1973, it is important that the stats fro the two periods relate to each other.  I’m aware that these tanks were up-armoured and up-gunned over time, so tried to factor this in as well.

I’m not a treadhead by any means, so don’t want to get swamped with angles, velocities etc.  FoW seems like a nice simple system to use for the level of detail I’m interested in (which is get the tanks on the board and play a game).

This is what I have come up with so far with no points worked out yet, and comments are appreciated:

(key for those not used to FoW stats: F = front, S = side, T = top, RoF = rate of fire, AT = anti-tank, FP = firepower)

Israeli Tank Company – fearless veterans

Centurion Shot Cal – Fully tracked – armour F:14, S:9, T:3  105mm gun RoF:3, AT:17, FP:3+, stabiliser

M48A2C Magach – Fully tracked – armour F:13, S:8, T:3  gun as above, stabiliser

Israeli Mechanised Infantry Company – confident veterans

M113 Fully tracked armour – F:4, S:2, T:1

Infantry will be MG teams, but each team will have an AT projectile weapon as well, yet to be worked out.

Egyptian Tank Company – Confident Conscript

T55 Fully tracked armour – F:13, S:7, T:3 – 100mm gun – RoF:2, AT:16, FP:4+

T62 Fully tracked armour – F:14, S:7, T:3 – 115mm gun – RoF:2, AT:17, FP:3+

Egyptian Mechanised Infantry – Confident trained

BMP1 Fully tracked armour – F:4, S:2, T:1

These are slightly informed stabs in the dark. As I say, moderns is a new period for me, and I don’t have an exhaustive knowledge of any of this stuff by any means.  But i’m sure there are those of you out there that do!

Just a note on the ‘stabiliser’ rule to allow full RoF on the move. The T series don’t get this. One of the key elements that I wanted to reflect was the low firing rate of the Soviet designed tanks due to the cramped space in the turret and Soviet doctrine.

If you agree or not, please let me know, with reasons, so that I can tinker with this some more.

  1. Hi Nath
It looks similar to an earlier adaptation of Flames for the period. My group now has a play testable adaptation, if you are interested in reviewing and/or playtesting.
We’re good to go with an IDF Tank Co, and an Egyptian Tank Battalion list (probably best suited for Sinai games).
I think the Sho’t for 1967 is over armoured generally, but perhaps should be TA2, with most other tanks eing TA1. I’m not sure how much extra armour was applied between 1967 and 1973.
M113 – way over armoured (aluminium – rifle fire penetrates the side at close range, 0.50″ should penetrate the front at close range …

    • Hi Owen
Yeah, I was surprised by how close some of these are to the modern FoW lists when I found the yahoo groups archive (except the M113…). I’d love to have a look at your lists and do a bit of playtesting – we’re putting everything together and could have a dry (as in not totally painted) run in a couple of weeks time.
      Thanks
      Nate

  2. what stats would you use for the BMP 1 main gun? What about the RPG 7 and saggers? Do you have Stats for BTR 50 or BTR 152?

    • Hi Steve
BMP1 main gun is 73mm with 16″ range, RoF 1, AP 9, FP 4+. Sagger is 8″-32″, RoF 1, AT 16, FP 3+ at about 30 or 35 points. BTR50 is tracked with armour 2,1,0. BTR152 is wheeled with 1,0,0.
These are the stats from Owen’s work. I’ll get in touch with him and see if I can forward them all through to you.
      Nate
